Maurice Leverne Huggins, a South Carolina case manager and human services specialist works at the Department of Social Services where he is an advocate for children and families. Long before this position, Maurice Leverne Huggins earned a degree in sociology from Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Claflin University began as a historically black college/university, but since its inception, it has grown to become inclusive of all races and genders. In December 2020, Claflin University announced a partnership with the South Carolina Department of Corrections to help incarcerated residents earn their bachelor’s degrees at no cost. This partnership reflects the university’s commitment to inclusiveness and providing access to education to all people regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, or religion.

Claflin University President Dr. Dwan J. Warmack stated in a press release issued in December that education can empower those who obtain it, and for many incarcerated individuals access to education provides them with a pathway for successful re-entry into society. The DOC already is accepting applications for 2021 when Claflin says it will enroll its inaugural class.
